 If you are considering making online surveys for money, consider our experience in 2017: Three of us spent more than 50 hours in total doing paid surveys, and our combined profits did not break $ 90.

So, no, online surveys were not an effective way for us to make money. (Skip to the list or keep reading about our experience.)

Decline in paid online surveys

To be honest, taking paid surveys was easy and can be done at home, if you have an internet connection. The sites we reviewed were free and did not require any education or skills. Depending on the website, surveys may be an easy - or wrong - way to earn a few bucks or a frustrating job.

Some sites pay more than others. We inform sites that disclose the amount of money for each survey and compare it with the appropriate ones. We are afraid of sites that compensate us for the confusing points system and send us surveys that we would not normally qualify for.

Note that your statistics and other factors greatly determine whether you are eligible for the survey. All three of those surveyed in 2017 were unmarried 20-year-old women living in urban areas. According to the survey, we may or may not have been eligible participants. Your profile may lead to different results from ours

Paid survey sites

Below is what we found by trying to spend an hour a day for five days at each place. On some days at several sites, there was not enough testing to complete the hour. (We did not count that time in our review hours.)

We have listed these sites in the U.S. based on the average hourly rate we have achieved in 2017, from our highest income to low.

1. OneOpinion

Average income: $ 2.03 per hour

This website includes a survey with an active testing process. Its dashboard is informative and displays useful categories, such as your job and customer support form. The site was above average in selecting the polls we qualified for. As for the points given for each survey, 500 or 1,000 points may seem like a lot at first, but if they are converted to real prizes, you will get 50 cents or dollars. Also, you can't withdraw money until you reach 25,000 points, which is equivalent to $ 25. Learn more in our OneOpinion review.

2. Survey Junkie

Average income: $ 1.57 per hour

This website includes a small survey, but it stands out. The site has a clean, easy-to-use dashboard and provides a high value for each survey you complete. The point system is straightforward and shows you how important your points are in dollars right on the dashboard. But you have to get 500 points before you can withdraw money. 3. Opinion Outpost

Average income: $ 1.50 per hour

Some survey sites provide users with information and opportunities - but not Opinion Outpost. Its simple, intuitive website has made it possible for us to do research after research without much thought. As a beginner, we also introduce the site's direct points system, which works for 10 cents per point. Most importantly, we actually made money. We made an average of $ 1.50 per hour on Opinion Outpost and managed to pull it off with Amazon. See our Opinion Outpost update for more information.

4. I-Say it

Average income: $ 1.01 per hour

This site only provides surveys through Ipsos, the leading market research company. The site offers fewer surveys than listed, but stays in the i-Say throughout the survey, making all the impressions easier. Sometimes it shows surveys that you have already tried, which are confusing. For more information, check out the i-Say review.

5. MyPoints

Average income: $ 1.01 per hour

This site provided 75 survey opportunities, the majority of any site we reviewed. But it also had a very low success rate, 9.33%, and a low pay per hour average. Also, the reasons for the withdrawal of the study were often unclear. On one occasion, we were ostracized after being asked to spell “Purple.” (Yes, we spelled it correctly.) 6. Swagbucks

Average income: $ 0.89 per hour

This website offers many opportunities for surveys, but withdrawals are common. Sometimes we were released just by clicking a link to the survey. Swagbucks comprises of third-party surveys, so some of the sites you send are better than others. It takes a while to earn points, but the extended prize market of the site has many options to choose from, including gift cards, sweepstakes and PayPal payments. 7. Toluna

Average income: $ 0.71 per hour

Unlike many other sites, Toluna allows users to choose topics for their experiments, such as electronics or tourism, which has made the work more appealing. However, this benefit did not make its salary lower. When we converted points into cash, we earned only 71 cents an hour - which is one of the lowest prices on all the sites we reviewed. 8. InboxDollars

Average income: $ 0.41 per hour

New users receive a $ 5 bonus after verifying their email address via InboxDollars. But that didn't help us figure out how much we earned per hour while doing surveys — 41 cents, the lowest rate among the 12 sites we reviewed. Sometimes, instead of sending us surveys, the site directs us to promotions that require our address, phone number, and date of birth. Read our InboxDollars review.

Are the paid polls worth it?

Regardless of where the site is located, the revenue generated by conducting surveys can be small compared to other job opportunities. The minimum wage was $ 7.25 per hour, for example, and our hourly wage ranged from 41 cents to $ 2.03. Many test sites also require a small number of points before we can redeem them for prizes. On most websites, we did not reach that minimum after five hours of operation. (You may want to consider other recreational activities that make money.)
